Likely, those people didn’t read the caption, so let’s see if we have better luck this time 😅

When it comes to infertility 2 things are true:

1️⃣ there is no single cause, but rather a constellation of factors including environmental toxicants.

2️⃣ infertility rates are increasing, with the WHO estimating 1 in 6 people globally are effected by infertility.

When we analyze conventional cleaning products there are 3 types of endocrine (hormone) disrupting chemicals included in their formulations that are linked to reduced fertility.

👉 Phthalates: these endocrine-disrupting chemicals are used in household cleaners. Exposure has been linked to poor semen quality, endometriosis, and PCOS (both are leading causes of infertility in women) poor egg and embryo quality in women undergoing IVF, and more.

In fact, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends that clinicians help their patients reduce exposure to EDC’s (endocrine-disrupting chemicals, including phthalates.

👉Galaxolide: This fragrance compound has been linked to decreased sperm quality in animal studies.

👉 Quats: Quats stand for quaternary ammonium compounds and are commonly found in disinfectant products. Some animal research has found that exposure to Quats at levels similar to what people are exposed to may be linked to reproductive issues.

Mr. Clean and Pine Sol (the two cleaners I specifically called out in my previous reel) contain these very chemicals.

As I mentioned above (and in that last caption) it’s not just the floor cleaner, but a myriad of exposures we get day-in and day-out that contribute to health issues like infertility.

We cannot change the types of cleaners we were exposed to as children, but we can make meaningful changes moving forward to improve our reproductive chances.

Perimenopause and Menopause are greatly impacted by environmental toxins, and a 2023 study published in the journal of Environmental Research found that phthalates (found in synthetic fragrances, personal care products and air fresheners, along with some plastics) are associated with an increased risk of experiencing 🔥hot flashes🔥 in midlife women.

By now, you’ve probably heard me and other low-t

By now, you’ve probably heard me and other low-tox educators talk about phthalates being harmful (most notably the role they play in male infertility) but what are they exactly, where are we being exposed, and how do we avoid them?

Phthalates aren’t one single chemical, but rather a group of chemicals that are used in thousands of applications, mostly within fragrance mixtures, and in certain types of plastics. Because of how common they are, phthalate exposure is unfortunately part of our daily lives.

This is concerning because exposure to some of these hormone-disrupting chemicals has been associated with things like:

❗️Type II diabetes and insulin resistance
❗️Lowered semen quality
❗️Altered male reproductive development
❗️Increased risk of childhood allergies
❗️Endometriosis
❗️ADHD
❗️Breast/uterine cancer

Even though exposure to phthalates is a part of daily life, we CAN lower our exposure to them, and lowering exposure starts with knowing where these exposures are happening…

The good news: phthalates don’t build up in the body (we can generally pee them out within 24 hours)

Our detox pathways do their job, but constant re-exposure overwhelms those pathways, and they can’t keep up.

So practicing avoidance is key. When we lower the amount of phthalates coming into our bodies we can quickly lower the amount circulating inside of us!

👉🏽 here are some common sources of phthalate exposure:

🕯️Home fragrances like candles, diffusers, incense, fabric sprays
💄Personal care products that are scented (some brands even put fragrance in eye shadow 😳) as well as perfume and cologne
🧽 Household cleaning products like laundry detergents and softeners, kitchen and bathroom cleaners (to mask the (chemical/toxic scent)
🌪️ Housedust: studies have found 100% of dust samples to contain phthalates!
🍟 Fast food is highly processed and a meaningful source of phthalate exposure.

Slowly making changes to the products you buy and use every day can lower the levels of these chemicals in your body!

If you have been following me for any length of time, you already know that I DO NOT subscribe to the idea that fertility/infertility are solely a women’s issue!

The science is clear; it turns out that male infertility is on the rise, and it’s contributing to approximately half of all cases of infertility!

Recent studies have shown that sperm counts in men have declined by over 50% in the last 50 years — this trend isn’t just alarming, it comes with significant implications for male fertility and their overall health.

While many factors are likely contributing to dropping sperm rates (think age, smoking, fitness level, obesity) the research is increasingly finding environmental toxins to be the culprit.

More specifically, environmental toxins known as endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) which are found in everyday items like plastics, pesticides, furniture, cleaning products, personal care products, water and soil.

Some of the chemicals being implicated are:

☣️Phthalates
☣️Pesticides
☣️Flame Retardants
☣️PFAS
☣️Bisphenols (BPA/BPS/BPF)

These chemicals interfere with hormone functioning, and can lead to reduced sperm count, decreased motility, and increased DNA fragmentation in sperm.

I’m not one to tell anyone they HAVE TO DO any ONE thing to be on a low-tox journey…

I’ve had plenty of 🧌 on the internet try to revoke my Low-Tox card for any # of reasons

But I do believe that a low-tox lifestyle is most impactful to your health when you’re doing your best to accomplish these 3 things…

1️⃣ Following nature’s circadian clock — waking with the sunrise, getting natural light in your eyes from an open window or by going outside before you get any other artificial light.

🤓Blocking blue light from artificial sources at night especially after sunset when blue light is no longer visible in the sky.

2️⃣ Supporting your natural detox pathways. I don’t mean spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on a detox smoothie kit, or special teas, or following some restrictive diet for 10+ days before going back to your regular, toxic habits.

I’m talking about eating real organic, whole foods instead of ultra processed food, eating at home instead of out so often, supporting your liver, sweating, 💩everyday (preferably 2x a day), drinking filtered water, walking, strength training.

The basics that so many of us have become completely disconnected from is really your best course of action.

3️⃣ Avoiding hormone disrupting chemicals & carcinogens from petroleum derived ingredients in the products you use everyday on your body and around your home.

This is the hardest part, frankly, for 2 reasons: conventional products with the most expensive marketing are polluted w/toxic ingredients that interfere with our hormones. We often reach for these because they are familiar. The second reason is that we aren’t educated on ingredients, we don’t typically know what ingredients like EDTA is or why brands choose to add phenoxyethanol to our face wash.

Knowing how to navigate an ingredient list, understanding what different ingredients are, and which ones are harmful takes education and time.

No, I DO NOT recommend the popular, influencer shower filter that’s incredibly over-priced and actually compares itself to a Brita filter!

My god, how embarrassing! 😳

Shower water is just tap water. All the same contaminates coming out of your kitchen sink are flowing through your shower pipes too.

We may not be drinking our shower water, but our skin and hair are absorbing the chemicals in the water, our lungs are inhaling the gases, and all of that has a negative impact on our toxic burden.

While heathier looking skin, and hair is a good motivator for getting a shower water filter, aesthetics aren’t the only benefit.
