Integrating Mindfulness and Science-Based Research for a Low-Tox Approach to Living
I’m Amanda, and focusing on all the ways I can approach my life from a low-tox perspective is what lights me up.
I certainly have not always lived this way. I was a smoker for 15 years, I believed the ‘dose made the poison’, and that nothing sold in stores could possibly be unsafe. It’s the same conditioning we all have had; blind consumer trust is the role we’ve been told to play.
Many people get into low-tox living because of an acute or even chronic reaction to toxic products or environmental toxin exposures, but for me, it was getting pregnant with my daughter and feeling determined to give her the best outcome possible that spurred me to making low-tox changes. It felt as though I had nine months to get it right. What I didn’t realize was that everything I was being exposed to during my pregnancy, and had been exposed to throughout my life — in fact what my grandmother and mother had been exposed to you in their lifetimes– had already determined to some extent my daughter’s outcome.
So many of us believe that because we appear to be fine, and we feel fine that nothing is wrong, and harm isn’t being done, but it’s the chronic effects of long-term exposures to mostly man-made chemicals that disrupt our hormones and thyroid function that are making us Not Fine.
As a former educator, I witnessed first-hand the ways in which we unknowingly poison our children with fake food heated in plastic, cheap petroleum-based school supplies they use, and toxic cleaning chemicals that release volatile organic compounds into the air they breathe. What’s happening in our schools is just a reflection of what is happening in our homes, and our children are paying the price with asthma, behavior disorders, ADHD, autism, depression, early puberty, and childhood cancers.
We cannot control all of our environmental exposures, but we can control our exposures in our own homes to a large extent, and that is what I choose to focus on so that my daughter and I can live our healthiest lives –and I’m willing to bet that you want the same thing for yourself and your (future) kids.
On this journey I have learned that my first line of defense is understanding ingredients lists. Inundating myself with all the knowledge I can absorb has brought me to a place where I can now take an pro-active approach to my health and the health of my daughter without feeling scared or overwhelmed, and that’s where I want to help you get to; a place of empowerment knowing that you CAN control what comes into your home, and never being fooled by greenwashing and healthwashing tactics again.
I’ve dedicated hundreds of hours to research, and education on my own imperfect journey to low-tox living which has brought me to the unique position of knowing how to guide you on your journey with compassion, a little bit of tough love, and an emphasis on whole body wellness and mindfulness.
